Honesty has the ability to bring even the most head strong individual to his knees, like an unsuspected sucker punch to the gut. “My friends don’t cry,” sings Nathan Hussey of the indie rock quartet All Get Out, “they tuck it in and then they drink at night.” All Get Out’s stunning debut record, The Season, is a knock-down drag-out alt-rock expose. The listener just has to have the moxie to step into the ring with the group, for it will be a tough 39-minute bout.

The Season is a painful listen; there are no two ways about it. All one can do is let his inner masochism take the driver’s seat.  Raucous, unpredictable, and raw, The Season is a blend of Modest Mouse and Manchester Orchestra, not entirely surprising to those who follow the products of Favorite Gentleman Records, which is All Get Out’s label. There is a definite flow on The Season. Kicking the ride off is the boisterous, horn-filled “My Friends.” The track serves up the first punch, hitting the listener squarely in the jaw. But the record doesn’t relent. “Church Doors and Skeptics” and “Me And My Lovers” finds Hussey channeling his inner Andy Hull. Both tracks would not be out of place on any Manchester Orchestra album. The former is eclectic, moving from jangly pop to math rock without feeling over bearing and weighed down. The latter is atmospheric and high-rising.

All Get Out, much like Seahaven, has this uncanny ability to craft catchy choruses without intentionally sounding radio-ready. The slightly demented, yet totally relatable “Lucky Bastard” is an ideal example. “I got another reason I want to go home // This city’s fucking cold and I want to go home // I’m feeling co-dependent, I miss my baby girl,” Hussey bellows during the chorus. Yet when All Get Out bring the volume down a tad, one finds The Season’s best moments.
